NFL GAMES OF THE WEEK – 2014 – WEEK SIX
Alright, my undefeated streak ended last week when KC couldn’t make the magic happen in Santa Clara (for those of you that are scratching your head and trying to figure what NFL team is from Santa Clara, Google the 49ers new stadium!).
However, having picked eight of the past nine games correctly, I’m still feeling pretty good. This week should get me back on the 3-0 side of things. Well, maybe!
Let’s take a look.
This week’s Lock of the Week (4-1).
There were a couple of games to choose from in this category, and I almost went with the Chargers over the Raiders. But as tempting as that was, I decided to go to the other side of this great country and pick the Denver Broncos over the host New York Jets.
Either game would have been a lock, but with the vast differences between the Broncos and the Jets, I couldn’t pass this one up.
First, at QB we have the most efficient Field General in the game going up against a guy that is “full of potential”, yet consistent with bad decisions. Then we have a slew of good receivers going against a crew that consists of Denver’s #3 or #4 option a year ago being considered the #1 go to guy for the Jets this season.
And the coaches? Do we really need to compare Fox and his staff to Ryan and his?
As long as Mr. Thomas doesn’t try breaking anyone’s leg this week, the Broncos should move the ball error free and at will and blow the Jets out of the water!
This week’s Upset of the Week (3-2).
I must admit, I’m a little bit concerned with my Upset of the Week this time around. Unfortunately, this is the only game this week that the experts and I have gone different directions with. When’s the last time that happened?
Where I was absolutely certain with my pick regarding the Jets, it’s the other New York team that has me biting my nails this week. That’s right, I’m going with the New York Giants to upset the host Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
Two weeks ago, my pick would have gone confidently in the other direction. The Giants looked like a team that would struggle to win any games this year, while the Eagles seemed to be able to dig themselves a huge hole and then find a way to climb out and win.
My, how things have changed. The Giants have re-discovered themselves after a year and a half hibernation and the Eagles have come crashing back to reality. And the reality is they are a good offensive team and a horrible defensive team. Which means, if they screw up on offense and find themselves in a hole, they are less likely to dig themselves out.
And with the Giants suddenly believing they can beat anyone, that is exactly what will happen. I’m looking for New York to cause three or four turnovers, turning them into double-digit points and creating an insurmountable lead that the Eagles will not be able to recover from.
Look for the Giants to take this one by two touchdowns!
This week’s Game of the Week (4-1).
Another game that I can’t believe I’m picking for the Game of the Week. Looking at the schedule in week one, I would have figured this game to be a battle between and 0-5 team and a 4-0 team.
And yet, here we are in week six looking at the 4-1 Dallas Cowboys visiting the 3-1 Seattle Seahawks! And I’m actually picking this one for the Game!
Look, I know most of you non America’s Team fans (a club of which I have been a member for more than four decades) are thinking this will be a blowout. And it’s very possible that it will be. After all, the Cowboys have a reputation over the past five or so years of folding under pressure.
But there seems to be a difference this season. They actually are not forcing the passing game down everyone’s throat. They are utilizing their very talented running back, which is making their passing game that much more efficient.
Unfortunately, they are facing one of the best defenses in the league this week in the loudest and most unfriendly stadium in the league. If there ever were a time and place for them to show their real selves and choke, this is it.
We’ll see what kind of a team the Cowboys really are. Will they get blown out of the water, embarrassed beyond belief and find themselves limping back towards their usual level of mediocrity? Or will they stay level-headed and make this a game, showing everyone that they are to be taken seriously?
Only time will tell. But one things is for certain. The Seattle Seahawks will beat the Dallas Cowboys!
Now go crack open a cold one and enjoy the games!
